ON Wednesday night Taylors Lakes’ women travelled to Avondale Heights to form a new-look EDFL Women’s team.
Taylors Lakes originally didn’t have enough numbers to fill a side, but Avondale Heights Women’s Co-Ordinator, Sevil Francis, saw this as an opportunity to grow her side at Canning Reserve.
“We thought we’d just help our mates in the EDFL and give their girls the opportunity to keep playing,” Francis told essendondfl.com.au.
“We thought it was the best opportunity for them and us to field the team.”
Francis says there are about 15 Avondale Heights players who have combined with the five Taylors Lakes players, with more to come.
One player in particular was Francis’ motivation to get an EDFL Women’s side up and running at Canning Reserve.
Rita Ceravolo (pictured) played Auskick at Avondale Heights and has stayed at the club ever since.
Francis says she is coming up to her 100th game and wanted to keep her at the club to experience that achievement.
As far as the achievement of making finals, Francis says that’d simply a bonus for her side.
“I suppose this year, we won't think of finals,” she said.
“There’s a lot of clubs that have been playing for a couple of years that are set up and are really on their way.
“We’re just starting off new, we’re just going to take it one game at a time and just build on that and hopefully get success in a couple of years’ time.
“If anything happens this year and we get into finals then it’s a bonus.”
Francis says that the combined side has given the Avondale Heights women a new experience that will change their role at the club.
“It’s given that opportunity for our girls to get motivated and feel part of the club, not just helpers and volunteering,” she said.
“They’re actually going to be on the ground and pulling on the big white V.”
