Airport Toyota Women's Outlook - April 20, 2023

Presented by Airport Toyota

There’ll be just two games in the Premier Division following the two played on Good Friday.

Two victorious sides from Round 1 in Aberfeldie and Moonee Valley will do battle at Aberfeldie Park coming off two different victories.

Aberfeldie won a close contest against Oak Park by two points, while Moonee Valley perhaps surprised many, knocking off Westmeadows by 91 points.

The Two Blues held a bit of a buffer at three quarter time after being neck and neck all day with the Kangaroos, and managed to hold on late in a thriller.

Oak Park are considered by many to be one of the stronger sides in this competition following a strong Good Friday victory on the back of Sam German and Alex Quigley, so it was a strong performance from Aberfeldie considering the unknown of them based on their off season.

Ellie Huggard and Ilaria Akers were among the top performers and they’ll need every bit out of those two against an inform Moonee Valley.

The Fog piled on 16 goals with Charlotte D’Ambrosio kicking six, Anita Ovenden kicking four, and five other goal scorers.

That offensive firepower will be an interesting watch with coach Dean Rioli starting off the season strong.

Westmeadows suffered a big loss as mentioned, and coach Gemma Wright will be hoping to scratch that off as a mulligan, while Marby defeated Strathmore who were coming off a solid win against the reigning premiers in Keilor.

If any results in Round 1 will be looked back on later in the season as an outlier, we should get an idea of that in this matchup.

There’ll be a full fixture of games in Division One which saw mostly one-sided contests in Round 1 action.

Essendon Doutta Stars and Tullamarine will meet following convincing losses for both sides, where Tulla will be looking to get their first win on the board following promotion.

For Douttas, they lost a lot of their key players from last season and it showed with their 53-point loss to Greenvale, so a matchup with Tulla should be a good chance to see where they’re at.

Sunbury Kangaroos went down in a big loss to Gisborne and will come up against Greenvale who are on the other side of the momentum swing.

Having lost many of their key players, the Kangaroos are playing with a large range of players from their second side, while the Jets are coming into the season having just lost Alex Quigley.

It’ll be an uphill battle for Sunbury Kangaroos but a competitive performance should give them some confidence moving forward.

Burnside Heights will meet Sunbury Lions with both coming off strong victories, but Burnside Heights perhaps made the biggest statement after dropping from Premier Division.

All their stars fired against Tulla as Kayla Ravanello’s seven goals boosted the Bears to a strong 12.11 scoreline.

For the Lions, Teah Bell starred with four goals as her side downed an underrepresented Pascoe Vale outfit.

The latter will face stiff opposition in Gisborne who held Sunbury Kangaroos scoreless, putting up 34 scoring shots (12.22).

Amy Starzer was a big inclusion and promptly starred, as Loree Ravelo was named their best.

There’ll be two games in Division Two again following Greenvale unfortunately not being able to put up a second side again against Westmeadows 2.

We’ll see 2022 grand finalists Airport West for the first time this year when they face Aberfeldie 2, and led by their stars Cheyene Macumber and Shae Montrose, they’ll be looking to state their claim as the side to beat this year.

The other game will see Coburg Districts facing Moonee Valley 2 with the former having a bye last week, it’ll be our first time seeing them as well.

The Fog’s second side downed Westmeadows 2 in a remarkably similar fashion to their firsts, where Madena Jaffer bagged five goals, with a further seven individual goal scorers and pose a good challenge to the Lions.

The Lions seem to be the bigger mover in the competition, announcing a number of new signings in recent weeks.

Elise Marchant, Sarah Docherty, Nicole McCambridge, Jess Ramos, Mikayla Aquilina, and Beth Millsteed are among the new signings.
