EDFL Men's Weekend Outlook - Thursday April 25, 2024

Presented by Strathmore Community Bank | By Joseph Ibic

Airport West will be searching for their first win of the season when they meet Essendon Doutta Stars at Hansen Reserve this Saturday.

The Eagles have had a tough start to the season facing both Aberfeldie and Keilor in their opening matches and suffering losses in both.

They will be hoping to get their season going against Douttas in a winnable game.

Douttas will be going into their Round 3 clash with momentum after beating Avondale Heights by 41 points last weekend.

The Stars were only leading by six points at the final change but went on to kick six goals to one in the final term to put the contest to bed.

Bailey Ryan and Declan Tully both booted five goals for Douttas as Airport West will need to find a way to nullify their influence this weekend.

Deer Park are another team looking for their first win of the season as they come up against the unbeaten Pascoe Vale at John McLeod Reserve.

Deer Park have had a difficult start to life in the top flight with comfortable defeats to both Keilor and Greenvale.

It won’t be getting any easier for Deer Park either as they come up against Pascoe Vale who are shaping up to be a genuine premiership contender.

Pacco have started the season with two dominant wins including a five-goal win last week against last year’s runners up Strathmore.

The Panthers will head into the game as strong favourites to keep their unbeaten streak alive but seeing as this is the two teams’ first meeting, Deer Park will be trying to use that to their advantage as they search for an upset.

East Keilor are the third team still searching for a win when they come up against Greenvale at Overland Reserve.

The Cougars are currently sitting last after defeats to Strathmore and Aberfeldie to start the season and will be looking to bounce back strongly this week.

Greenvale recorded their first win of the season over Deer Park last week showing great enudrance as they run out four quarters after turning a seven-point lead at half-time into a 39-point win.

The Jets will be looking for another win to show they are in the hunt for finals, while the Cougars will believe they are a big chance for a first win of the season.

The unbeaten Hillside will take on Moonee Valley at Hillside Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Sharks are coming off a high-scoring thriller against West Coburg which they won by three-points in what could potentially be a matchup we see later in the year.

Hillside forward Josh Covelli is currently leading the goalkicking for the division with 15 goals in three matches, so his former side in Moonee Valley will need to find a way to shut him down if they are going to get the win.

Moonee Valley are coming off a 109-point thrashing at the hands of Maribyrnong Park.

The Valley’s defence was in tatters with four Marby Park players kicking four or more goals in the game.

Ian Denny's side will need to sharpen up defensively against Hillside who are another strong attacking side.

St Albans are flying under the radar early in the season as they come up against Craigieburn at Kings Park Reserve.

The Saints are undefeated after the first two rounds and while their accuracy in front of goal last week was a worry, they will have the confidence that if they are accurate in front of the goal, they can dominate games.

Craigieburn on the other hand, have had a more mixed start to the season with one win and one loss and are coming off the bye from last week.

This match looms as a big test for both sides to prove that they are not only finals-worthy teams, but also contenders for further honours.

Roxburgh Park will take on last years grand finalists West Coburg at Lakeside Oval.

Roxy are coming off a 21-point loss to St Albans where they just ran out of gas after being within a goal at the last change.

West Coburg will also be looking to bounce back after losing a nailbiter to ladder leaders Hillside by three points.

The Burgers will be confident they can record their second win of the season, while Roxburgh Park will be out to charge their season with a massive upset.

East Sunbury will play host to Taylors Lakes at John McMahon Recreation Reserve

East Sunbury were close to recording their first EDFL seniors win since re-joining the competition after they lost to local rivals Sunbury Kangaroos.

Despite the loss, East Sunbury will have gained confidence from their improved performance and will be hoping for another encouraging performance.

Taylors Lakes will be fresh this week after coming off a bye and will be looking to start from where they left off in Round 1 and record a second win for the season.

Lions forward Ben Weightman booted eight goals in their first and only game of the season so far and East Sunbury will need to find a way to stop his impact if they are any chance of causing an upset.

Hadfield will take on Sunbury Kangaroos at Martin Reserve to round out the weekend.

The Hawks beat Glenroy by 14 points to bounce back from a disappointing loss in Round 1 with vice-captain Jack Wallace scoring four goals, as he will be looking to inspire Hadfield to a win this week as well.

Sunbury Kangaroos also rebounded from a loss in Round 1 to post a win last week, and while the Kangaroos would be happy with the win, they'd know there is much room for improvement.
