The 2026 season is just around the corner so EDFL Media will be previewing each club heading into Round One. Next, we chat to Essendon Doutta Stars coach Craig Rutley who provides some insights on their 2026 campaign.
2025: 4th (8W, 8L, 117.23%)
Coach: Craig Rutley
PRE-SEASON FOCUS
"We've been focusing on a lot of ball use. The girls need to be handling the ball as much as possible so the only running we do is incorporated into drills."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
"Emily Kostandinov has had a great pre-season, Aleesha Hobbs is super fit, and I think Jessie Hulett is in for a big year.
"Mia Tully has had a great pre-season so I'm looking forward to seeing her improvement. Jade Cilia and Isla Iannacone are two young players we have recruited and are looking very good on the track."
2026 OUTLOOK
"One of our biggest goals for 2026 is to get the women enjoying training again. By the numbers we are getting on the track, I think that is happening.
"We're also looking to close the gap on last season’s top three."

EDFL MEDIA SAYS
It's been consecutive finals trips for Essendon Doutta Stars since earning promotion, and they'll be hoping for more of the same in 2026. They'll have their work cut out for them in what's looking like a tough Premier Division, but they'll feel well placed after a strong off-season led by new coach Craig Rutley. Can Douttas take the next step?
