2024 Women's Season Preview - Moonee Valley

#RoadToWindyHill

The 2024 season is just around the corner so EDFL Media will be previewing each club heading into Round One. Next, we chat to new Moonee Valley coach Lee Newman who provides some insights on their 2024 campaign.

Coach: Lee Newman

PRE-SEASON FOCUS

"Our focus has been to have fun, get fit with footies in hand, and work on game awareness by using match play drills. Everyone has stress in their lives so what's the purpose of footy if you are not enjoying yourself and that philosophy has been central to our preseason."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

"We are equally excited by some of our ladies who are new to the game, some who are returning from higher levels, the core group who played finals last year, and the girls coming into our under 18s and seniors from the juniors.

"There is so much upside to this group, in both their footy ability and also their character and approach to life. The Moonee Valley Football Club has improved and thrived since the ladies program started in 2019.

2024 OUTLOOK

"We want to have a lot of fun, improve, and play to our full potential. For each and every one of us to take something positive out of the year."

RAPID FIRE WITH LEE NEWMAN

Shot after the siren to win, who do you want kicking it?

Georgia Marsland.

Biggest pest at the club?

All the Richmond Supporters!

Who might be viewed as the coach's pet?

All the Carlton supporters!

Who’d put their hand up to be the pre-game DJ?

Bron Peddley.

Which side are you looking forward to playing the most and why?

Love it when we play one of the top sides. Last year it was Oak Park and Abers, both play an exciting, quick, and skilful brand of footy, it’s a pleasure to watch even when on the receiving end. It’s also great to see which of our girls stand up and play well in the big games. Best way for a player to build their reputation.

EDFL MEDIA SAYS

Moonee Valley worked their way to a prelim in season 2023 after compiling a competitive 2022 season. It's a clear indication their retention and development is in the top echelon with just one player from their preliminary final side moving on in the off season. Three players with VFLW and AFLW experience have signed with the club, but it remains to be seen how much time in the black and white they'll have under new coach Lee Newman.
