Round 11 Preview - EDFL Women's (Part 2)

By JULIA MONTESANO

AVONDALE HEIGHTS/TAYLORS LAKES v STRATHMORE

Sunday 1:05pm @ Canning Reserve

IT has been a tough journey in EDFL Women’s so far for Avondale Heights/Taylors Lakes, as it has only recorded two wins.

The Lakers could not field enough players to take the field last week and therefore their game was deemed a walkover, giving them a week to refresh and prepare for a winnable game against the Mores.

This match pits the ninth-placed Strathmore against the 11th-placed Avondale Heights/Taylors Lakes and both are hungry for a win.

The Mores went down to the Tigers last week by 80 points, which followed up from their 141-point loss to Pascoe Vale.

Thankfully, Amy Hakim returned to the Strathmore side last week and will be vital if she is to come into the side again this week.

This game will be won and lost in the midfield, and the Mores need to take advantage of this, as the Lakers’ forward line isn’t the strongest.

Rebecca Said, Sally Portbury and Chloe Taylor will look to play key roles in the middle of the ground while for the Lakers, Rita Ceravolo will seek to stop the trio in their tracks.

The Lakers will also be hoping to put a convincing score on the board, and will rely on goalkickers, Hajer Mohamed and Jodie Allen to do so.

KEILOR v KEILOR PARK

Sunday 2:35pm @ Keilor Reserve

In the other local rivalry of the round, the reigning premiers will take on the winless Keilor Park Devils.

Both sides are coming into this Round 11 clash off a loss, making for an interesting battle set to take place at Keilor Reserve.

Despite going down to the Sunbury Kangaroos by 65 points, Kiera Riley had a good performance, booting two of the side’s three goals.

She was complemented by Jane Kasby and Jessie-Louise Gathercole, who both put in solid efforts last week.

Expect a big game from Blues leading goalkicker, Maddison Steel, as she looks to increase her tally against the Devils.

However, Keilor Park has only scored one goal in its last four games, so the players would be hungry to get a few more majors on the board this week.

This could come off the boot of Samantha German, who has kicked six goals from eight matches.

She will need plenty of support from the likes of Chiara Imela and Jordan Gwynne, who have been regular contributors throughout the season.

WESTMEADOWS v PASCOE VALE

Sunday 2:45pm @ Willowbrook Reserve

The Linton girls were absolutely sensational against Strathmore, with both Natalie and Danielle kicking four goals each.

This has helped Danielle Linton close in quickly on Burnside Heights’ Brooke McKinley, who is out for the season.

She will need to be at her best on Sunday though, as the Panthers bring a forward with them to Willowbrook Reserve who is coming off a 10-goal performance.

Sarah Theuma dominated against Strathmore, positioning herself well to receive the football inside 50.

Although Pascoe Vale did not play last week because of the Avondale Heights/Taylors Lakes walkover, the players will be ready to fire again as they aim to keep their undefeated streak intact.

Expect a big performance from Rebecca Foggie, whose strong hands and long kicks were vital in the Panthers’ mammoth win over the Mores.

For Westmeadows, it was Stephanie Andrews and basketballer, Brooklyn Ash who starred in Round 10.

They will need to produce another big performance if they are to take it up to the Panthers, who currently sit on top of the ladder with a whopping percentage of 2594.

BURNSIDE HEIGHTS v CRAIGIEBURN

Sunday 2:55pm @ Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve

After being given an almighty scare by Aberfeldie, Burnside Heights had the week off to rest and regain focus ahead of its big clash against Craigieburn.

The Eagles are coming off a win against the Sharks, recording their second consecutive win for the first time this season.

Megan Farrell shone at Hillside Reserve, kicking three of her side’s six goals, while usual goalkicker, Kayla Glazebrook kicked two.

Craigieburn will be hoping that these players as well as Anastasia D’Cruz, Samantha French and Rebecca Lines can have solid performances against the high-flying Bears.

However, Burnside Heights could be without goalkicker, Maddison Cooper, who went down with an injury against the Gorillas in Round 9.

But in better news, Maria Afuhaamango, captain, Kayla Ravanello and Western Jets star, Laycee Eustace have been in fine form and could lead their side to its ninth win of the season.

With both teams coming off consecutive wins, it could make for a fierce contest at Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve, with no team wanting to record a Round 11 loss.
