Moonee Valley Eyeing Top Four Finish

By JACOB MANZIE

THERE have been plenty of ups and downs this season for Moonee Valley.

The Fog is sitting fifth on the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 ladder, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of their year pans out.

An issue Moonee Valley has had thus far is the lack of avenues to goal.

Losing Josh Covelli - who was their main goal scorer in 2016 - at the end of last year to Burnside Heights, has left a gap that needs to be filled.

But Senior Coach Peter Gleisner is positive his team can still make finals come September.

“At the moment we’ve had Connor Ahern, the second ruckman, to go and play full forward,” Gleisner said.

“He’s kicked a couple of goals the last few weeks.”

If Moonee Valley are any chance of making the four come the back end of the season, they need to find another way to convert inside the arcs.

With the coach struggling to find that much-needed tall forward, the only other option is to score through their midfield.

Jacob Adkins, Jordan Faba and Corey Needs have all kicked multiple goals as midfielders throughout the season.

However, the recent inclusion of star player Braden Padmore - who has only played five games for the season because of a foot injury - may be the answer they are looking for.

Padmore’s already kicked six goals for the season and featured twice in the bests.

He has certainly added some spark to the side.

With eight games to go, there is no doubt Moonee Valley has every chance of making finals.

“If we beat the sides that we’ve already beaten, I think that will be enough to sneak us into fourth spot,” Gleisner said.
