Jets Get Their Grand Final Revenge In Clifton Park Thriller

By LIAM McALLION

THE success these teams have had over recent years has helped them display some amazing skills and hard-fought encounters.

This Grand Final rematch down at Clifton Park was no different.

With an always vocal and big crowd on the Abers Hill, fans were treated to a close one.

With Greenvale wanting to make amends for last year’s Grand Final loss and Aberfeldie wanting to its assert dominance on the division, a real passionate and heated start to the match made for a great spectacle.

Aberfeldie had a lot of the ball early, starting down back through contested intercept marking and run out of defence from Ryan Allan.

But the home side struggled to convert some simple set shots early in the piece.

Run out of defence was a highlight from both sides.

The pace and handballing out of defence was exciting to watch.

Jets defender Matt Koroneos did this and more, breaking the lines with his speed and countless inside 50 entries.

Josh Cubillo seemed to bull his way in and out of many of these contests for Aberfeldie, gaining a heap of the ball and adding a real presence around the ground for the home side.

The class in defence for both sides was a major standout, making it a low-scoring tussle for two of Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division’s elite sides.

Josh Pound really gave a spark at times for Aberfeldie and slotted one in the second term from the boundary, sending the hill into a frenzy.

Pound’s two goals and forward pressure kept Aberfeldie in the game but he wasn’t helped by some of the other forwards around him.

The Jets seemed to outsmart Aberfeldie at times, setting up a wall for their forward line and gaining countless shots on goal in the third quarter.

A big reason why this worked for Greenvale was the run and set-up play of ruckman Fabian Deluca, who took some clutch intercept marks.

His tap work and ability to be in the right spot for an intercept mark helped get his side over the line.

Aberfeldie’s fitness showed in the last as it won the clearance and inside 50 battle to slowly get back into the game.

Yet, like the first quarter, they missed numerous set shot chances and caused forward entry turnovers, which proved costly.

In the end it was a well-deserved victory for Paul Chapman’s men.
