EDFL-WRFL Senior Women’s Competition

THE Essendon District Football League and Western Region Football League have released the final fixture for the historic upcoming Senior Women’s Competition.

The EDFL boasts seven of the 11 clubs that will compete in the competition, with the VU Western Spurs and Sunbury Lions choosing to compete under the EDFL banner.

Craigieburn, Glenroy, Keilor, Pascoe Vale and Roxburgh Park are the other five EDFL clubs fielding Senior Women’s teams.

EDFL CEO Marc Turri spoke of the pride shared by the entire community in getting this new competition off the ground.

“The growth of women’s football has been a tremendous boost to the EDFL,” Mr Turri said.

“We’ve seen the growth over the years in the under-age Youth Girls competitions and this is now filtering through to our new Senior Women’s competition.”

The introduction of this new competition adds to the pathway that is now available for all female participants from Auskick, Youth Girls, TAC Cup, Senior Women’s, VFL Women’s and the AFLW.

The EDFL this year launched a stand-alone Youth Girls competition in three age groups off the back of significant growth in female participation numbers.

The league now has 21 of its clubs represented at Youth Girls level for the first time in its history, and with that it is expected we’ll see more EDFL clubs look to field a Senior Women’s team in coming years.

Mr Turri acknowledged all the hard work that has gone into making the new competition a reality.

“Congratulations goes out to all the clubs who will be fielding a team in the inaugural season of women’s football in the EDFL,” he said.

“Congratulations also to the players for choosing to play our great game.

“I’d like to thank and acknowledge the WRFL and its clubs for working with the EDFL to make this competition possible.”

The home-and-away season will span 14 rounds with finals to commence in August.
