Weekend Wrap

Aberfeldie Scores Dogged Win In The Wet

ABERFELDIE’S remarkable run of successive grand final appearances was kept intact against Keilor on Saturday.

It was a dour, low-scoring affair at a damp Windy Hill and goals came at a premium.

By three-quarter time both sides only had four goals each on the board, but the floodgates then opened in the last, with Aberfeldie managing to kick the final two goals of the game to earn a week off and the first spot in the September 16 decider.

Keilor will return to Windy Hill on Sunday against Strathmore in the Preliminary Final.

Final: Keilor 6.7-43 def. by Aberfeldie 7.9-51

Mores Bring Down Jets In Style To Advance To Prelim

STRATHMORE produced its best footy when it mattered most on Sunday at Windy Hill, beating Greenvale soundly in their knock-out first semi final.

Both sides came into the game off the back of disappointing final round losses but it was the Mores who looked to have turned their fortunes around, quickly getting out of the blocks with three goals to one in the opening quarter.

In fact, after Brett Stillman kicked the opening goal of the day, it took until third term for Greenvale to register a second major.

By half time the game was over with Strathmore piling on eight unanswered goals, including two each to Hamish McIntosh, Danny O’Leary and Kyle Weightman.

With the fizz out of the game, Greenvale was able to add some respect to the scoreboard in the last, but it was Strathmore who managed to advance with the win, setting up a mouth-watering Preliminary Final date with Keilor at Windy Hill this coming Sunday.

McIntosh finished with three goals and star midfielder Adam Iacobucci was named the Mores’ best.

Final: Strathmore 13.12-90 def. Greenvale 7.8-50

Demons Outlast Eagles To Make Another Division 1 Decider

TULLAMARINE will play in its third Essendon Ford Division 1 Grand Final since 2014 after beating Craigieburn in Sunday’s Preliminary Final at Coburg City Oval.

In what was an at times tense prelim, the Demons managed to pull clear from the Eagles late, kicking five goals to one in the final term to set up a grand final date with Airport West this coming Saturday at Windy Hill.

The margin was only one point at both quarter time and half time and remained under a kick at the final change as well, before the Demons were able to repeat their two home-and-away wins over the Eagles to advance to the big one.

Jack Kennedy starred with three goals alongside Brad Allen but the win might have come at a cost, with Shannon Dowsett cited for rough conduct and required to attend the EDFL tribunal on Tuesday evening.

Adam Bartrop, Anthony Franchina, Joel Flanigan and Ryan Pretty are also in doubt for the grand final after failing to take the field on Sunday.

Craigieburn’s loss also marked the end of Peter Bugden’s tenure as senior coach.

Lance Whitnall will now take over.

Final: Tullamarine 13.15-93 def. Craigieburn 10.11-71

East Sunbury Claims Maiden Finals Win

EAST Sunbury will face the Northern Saints at Coburg City Oval on Saturday for a spot in the Strathmore Community Division 2 Grand Final after toppling Moonee Valley in an entertaining game at Joe Brown Oval.

It remained a tight tussle in tricky conditions for most of the day but at each change, the Thunder managed to keep itself ahead of the Fog on the scoreboard.

Up by five points at three-quarter time, the Thunder, playing in its first ever senior EDFL final, managed to hold its nerve and kick away from Moonee Valley to earn a date with the Saints in this Saturday’s prelim.

Diquan Williams was the star up forward with three goals while gun mid Brad Bernacki earned best-on honours in the 26-point win.

Final: Moonee Valley 10.6-66 def. by East Sunbury 14.8-92

Magpies To Play In Third Decider In Five Seasons

ROXBURGH Park was at its clinical best against a woefully inaccurate Northern Saints outfit at Coburg City Oval on Saturday.

Sharp shooter Luke Capuano continued his hot run of late-season form with six majors as the Magpies made light work of the Saints in Saturday’s second semi.

The Saints struggled to convert inside 50 in the second term after allowing Roxburgh Park to kick the only four goals of the first, and from there failed the get themselves back into the game.

By three-quarter time the Magpies had booked their spot in the September 15 decider, going on to cruise to a 61-point win.

Ryan Micallef was the best player on the ground for the Magpies.

The Saints ended their dismal day with 4.12 on the board and will now have to return to Coburg Coty Oval this coming Saturday against East Sunbury in the Preliminary Final.

Final: Northern Saints 4.12-36 def. by Roxburgh Park 15.7-97
