Weekend Wrap

Mores Make A Statement By Knocking Off Premiers

STRATHMORE is now just one game and percentage off the pace from top spot after upsetting Aberfeldie at Mascoma Street on Saturday.

With Jaryd Cachia, Nick Lower and Nathan Grima all back in the line-up, the Mores enjoyed a dominant second term to edge ahead of the premiers at half time, before going on to claim a hard-fought 14-point win that will be sure to silence some critics.

Ruckman Hamish McIntosh returned to form with a nice bag of three goals alongside premiership player Shane Foulds, while Adam Iacobucci led what was arguably Strathmore’s strongest line-up for the year with best-on-ground honours.

Jayden Foster kicked two for Aberfeldie, who was missing Josh Cubillo, Nic Cattapan, Courtney Johns and Jackson Barrett.

Final: Strathmore 8.14-62 def. Aberfeldie 6.12-48

Stars Get Within Seconds Of First Win

A HEROIC game-saving mark by Greenvale’s Matt Bonello denied Essendon Doutta Stars its first win of 2018 in a thriller at Section Road.

Douttas stormed out of the blocks against what has been a shaky Greenvale outfit of late, kicking eight goals to one in the opening term.

After a dour second quarter, the winless visitors went into the sheds up by 33 points, but that was when Paul Chapman’s men clicked into gear.

With Fabian Deluca working his magic in the ruck and around the ground, the Jets slowly clawed their way back into the contest with the returning Jacob Thompson giving them a perfect focal point up forward – something Douttas lacked the longer the game went.

Greenvale piled on five unanswered goals in the third to get within seven points by the final change, before Nick Maric rose to the occasion in the last with some magic in front of goal.

The Jets got to the lead, but with the Stars finally goaling for the first time since the first quarter, the game came down to the wire.

With seconds left, a quick, but low snap on goal for Douttas was stopped on the goal line by Matt Bonello.

The final siren sounded with the ball in his hands and the Jets ahead by just four points.

Final: Greenvale 10.9-69 def. Essendon Doutta Stars 9.11-65

Demons Firm As Division One Flag Favourite

IF there was any doubt about who is the outright premiership favourite in Essendon Ford Division 1, Tullamarine put those doubts to rest on EDFL Match of the Day.

In what was the biggest game of the Essendon Ford Division 1 season, the Demons steamrolled the previously undefeated Airport West with their best performance under Dave Connell yet.

After conceding the first two goals of the day, Tullamarine scored eight unanswered goals through to the halfway mark of the third quarter, with recruits Steven Vocale, Ryan Pretty and Angelos Sidhom all bagging three goals each in what was an impressive runaway 70-point win.

Vocale was given the RAWFORM Seamless Compression EDFL Player of the Day prize.

Tullamarine is the new ladder-leader at 7-1.

Final: Tullamarine 15.16-106 def. Airport West 5.6-36

Roos Jump Clear Of Jags In Relegation Fight

OAK Park is a step closer from avoiding relegation after taking care of business at home to Jacana on Saturday.

The Jaguars were on track for what could have been their first win up in Essendon Ford Division 1, leading at the first two changes in what was a see-sawing affair.

However, the Kangaroos broke clear in the third quarter with three goals to one, and from there managed to ease clear of the Jags on their way to a very important 29-point win – their second in a row.

Co-skipper Danny Rajab was best-on-ground with two goals, while Jason Cloke played his part up the other end with three goals alongside team mate, Bryce Kimuliatis with two for the Jags.

Jacana is now two games back from a pack that includes Oak Park, Westmeadows and East Keilor, who are all at 2-6.

Final: Oak Park 16.10-106 def. Jacana 11.11-77

Hawks Get First Win In 35 Starts

HADFIELD is winless no longer, steamrolling Burnside Heights at Martin Reserve on Saturday.

The Bears went into the game as a heavy favourite having knocked off Moonee Valley seven days earlier, but the Hawks were primed for a big one.

With Omar Taleb (two goals) and Harley Ferguson (one) playing starring roles, the Hawks were the better team from start to finish, maintaining a comfortable lead from the outset after kicking five goals to one in the opening term.

The Bears kicked more goals in both the second and fourth quarters when using the scoring end, but nothing was going to get in the way of Hadfield singing the song.

The Hawks’ lead was 28 points at the final siren, signalling their first senior win since Round 8, 2016.

Burnside Heights is now two games back from the top four with a lowly percentage of 79.55.

Final: Hadfield 13.10-88 def. Burnside Heights 8.12-60

Magpies Move To Top Spot, Thunder In Trouble

AFTER what was a tumultuous week on and off the field, East Sunbury was keen to get back on the park and get things back on track on Saturday.

Only problem was, the Thunder ran into the hottest team of Strathmore Community Bank Division 2.

Roxburgh Park is the new ladder-leader with five wins from its last six games after easily taking care of an injury-hampered East Sunbury outfit at Lakeside Drive.

Carlos Ardon returned to the line-up and was best-on-ground in the 66-point win, while Luke Capuano starred up forward with four goals with Tumay Hamza and Osama Saad out of the side.

Ferras Merhi was also impactful with three goals out of the ruck.

The result leaves East Sunbury in third spot at 7-3 with Moonee Valley and Coburg Districts up next coming into the second half of the season.

Final: Roxburgh Park 18.11-119 def. East Sunbury 8.5-53

Saints Edge Out Fog At The Valley

THE Northern Saints have moved to second spot on the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 ladder after outlasting Moonee Valley in the closest game of the round at Ormond Park.

It stayed close for the duration in front of a healthy crowd at Moonee Valley’s on-going construction site, but the Northern Saints were slightly more efficient in front of the sticks and came out ahead by just two points at the final siren.

It was their fifth consecutive win.

Former Valley star Mousty Hammoud, in only his third game with the Saints, reminded the locals of his quality with two goals in a starring role, while skipper Eliot Kako and Wally Abbouchi also kicked two for the day.

Richard Potter, Braden Padmore, Matthew Brown and Michael O’Donoghue each kicked two for the fourth-placed Fog.

Final: Moonee Valley 10.12-72 def. by Northern Saints 11.8-74

Bears Cling Onto Top Two Spot In Clifton Park Thriller

BURNSIDE Heights had to come from behind to beat Aberfeldie under lights at Clifton Park back on Friday night to stay in second spot in EDFL Women’s.

The ever-improving Abers have been tough to beat at home this season and looked to have mastered the wet better than the Bears, but the hosts struggled to make it count on the scoreboard.

Their lead was only one point at three-quarter time due to inaccurate kicking, and in the final term the Bears finally broke clear with two goals to one, holding on for a very hard-fought four-point win.

Kayla Ravanello again led from the front with two of Burnside Heights’ five goals, while Aleesha Hobbs kicked two for Aberfeldie.

Bear Sina Mason was best-on-ground.

Final: Aberfeldie 3.11-29 def. by Burnside Heights 5.3-33
