Panthers Claim Top Four Scalp

PASCOE Vale jumped two spots up the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division ladder with an impressive 43-point win over Greenvale on EDFL Match of the Day on Saturday.

Both sides went into the Round 10 clash at Raeburn Reserve with a handful of key players missing and it was Greenvale who adapted well early, producing seven scoring shots to three to lead by nine points at quarter time.

After a Digby Morrell spray in the quarter time huddle, the Panthers clicked into gear in the second term with a blistering eight-goal burst, essentially putting the game to bed with a 39-point buffer at the main break.

The Jets never recovered, as Matthew Watson moved to outright second on the Premier Division goal kicking table with four of Pascoe Vale’s 15 goals for the day.

Nick Mellington, who has shared his time between Pascoe Vale and Williamstown at VFL level this season, was named The Meadows Greyhounds Best-On-Ground by the EDFL call team.

For the fourth-placed Jets, Josh Smith and Fabian Deluca battled hard throughout the day.

Douttas Steady Late Against Eagles

ESSENDON Doutta Stars’ finals hopes are alive after managing to withstand a fast-finishing Airport West outfit at Hansen Reserve.

The Stars were in control for much of the day and led by 39 points at three-quarter time on Saturday, before the relegation-threatened Eagles finally clicked into gear in the last.

Led by Anthony Aloi (three goals for the game) and Tyson Young (two), Airport West emerged from the three-quarter time huddle a different unit, kicking eight goals to three in a frantic final term.

But despite the gallant fightback, Douttas was too far ahead on the scoreboard and managed to come away with a very important 12-point win that keeps the 4-6 Stars in touching distance of the Premier Division top four.

Essendon VFL-listed player Bruno Laguda starred for the visitors with two goals alongside the in-form Mitch Day, who kicked three.

Marcus Calvaresi also impressed with two more goals for the Stars.

At 1-9, Airport West remains last on the table with two huge games against Maribyrnong Park and Glenroy looming after next week’s tricky road trip to Aberfeldie.

Roos Get First Win, Stay Alive In Relegation Fight

THE Division 1 relegation battle remains a three-horse race after Oak Park defeated Roxburgh Park at JP Fawkner Reserve on Saturday.

The Kangaroos jumped out of the blocks with five goals to two in the opening quarter and never looked back, controlling the game from start to finish to score a vital 46-point win.

It was Oak Park’s first win since Round 17 last year.

Aden Harris (four goals) and Jack Kennedy (three goals, pictured) starred up forward while Danny Rajab delivered a stellar performance in midfield.

Luke Capuano booted four of his side’s six goals as the Magpies struggled to convert in front of the sticks with 6.16 for the day.

The result, along with Taylors Lakes’ heavy loss to Tullamarine, means that the Lions, Kangaroos and Magpies are now all equal on points at the bottom of the Division 1 table with six rounds still to play.

The remaining games that will most likely decide who goes down to Division 2 in 2020 will both involve Taylors Lakes, with Roxburgh Park coming to Lionheart Reserve in Round 14 (broadcast game) and Oak Park visiting the Lions in Round 17.

Bears Storm Home At Northern

A SIX-GOAL haul from in-form forward Matthew Peterlechner helped Burnside Heights topple the Northern Saints at Charles Mutton Reserve.

In a game that lived up to the billing as the biggest of the round in Strathmore Community Bank Division 2, the third-placed Bears took another step closer to their first finals appearance by kicking six goals to one in the final quarter to emerge with a 30-point win on Saturday, their seventh of the season.

Up until the final change it was an entertaining and closely fought affair in ideal conditions at Charles Mutton, with the lead at each break staying within a kick throughout the day.

But the Bears had fresher legs in the last, handing the out-of-form Northern Saints their third successive loss.

Adam Sullivan continued his good season with four goals from midfield while Josh Covelli re-captured some of his goal kicking form from earlier in the year with four majors of his own.

Mark Sabatino continued his run of kicking at least one per game with three for the Northern Saints, with Sam Malual named their best.

Burnside Heights is third on the ladder with three percentage points separating the Bears from second-placed Moonee Valley, while the Saints remain in fifth spot with a two-win buffer separating them from both East Sunbury and Hadfield, who will play each other in this weekend’s EDFL Match of the Day broadcast game.

Sharks Feast On Tigers In Top Five Showdown

HILLSIDE’S finals hopes in EDFL Women’s - Premier were given a huge boost with an upset 14-point win over Westmeadows on Friday night.

The Tigers entered the Round 12 clash at Willowbrook Reserve without senior regulars Kirzty Brady and Tylah Evans and Hillside capitalised, controlling much of the game.

But the Sharks were wayward once inside 50 and missed several chances at goal, finishing the game at 2.9-21 to keep the Tigers in touching distance throughout.

Rachael Burton and Fiona Pazsa kicked the two goals necessary for victory for Hillside with Annalise Wilkie and Rachael Jackson starring around the ground.

Nat Linton was the lone goal kicker for Westmeadows with Jacinta Scott named the Tigers’ best in yet another strong individual display.

With two full rounds to come before the finals, Westmeadows is in fifth spot on the ladder with just two more premiership points than the sixth-placed Sharks.

Lions Edge Out Heights To Stay In Finals Hunt

MARIBYRNONG Park held off a gallant Avondale Heights outfit to claim its seventh win of the EDFL Women’s - Division 1 season on Saturday.

The Lions entered the game outside of the top five despite some very good recent form against sides higher on the ladder, and slowly managed to assert some authority at Canning Reserve.

Having kept the Heights goalless in the second and third quarters, the Lions led by 22 points at the final change, but the home team finished strongly in the last.

The final margin was 16 points, with Taylor Sharman booting two goals for the 7-5 Lions.

Ellie Lewis was best-on-ground for the victors.

Maribyrnong Park moved to fifth on the table with winnable games against Greenvale and Aberfeldie 2 still to come in the run home.
