Eagles Alive In Fight To Stay Up

STRATHMORE Community Bank Premier Division’s relegation rollercoaster ride took another big turn with Airport West defeating Glenroy on Saturday.

In what was one of the closer games of the day around the EDFL, Airport West managed to break clear of Glenroy in the second quarter at Sewell Reserve with five goals to two, establishing control from there.

Damandeep Aujla’s outstanding season continued, finishing with three goals while youngster Ethan McShanag also booted three and was best-on-ground in the 11-point win.

The Eagles are now equal with Avondale Heights at 2-11 with a huge Round 17 clash at Canning Reserve looming between the two sides.

Stars Edge Out Lions At NJO

MARIBYRNONG Park’s finals hopes were dealt a big blow at the hand of Essendon Doutta Stars on Saturday.

The Lions entered the Round 13 clash on the back of three successive wins and throughout the first half, looked the better side at Nipper Jordan Oval.

Poor conversion in front of goal plagued the Lions in the second half, eventually squandering a 14-point half time lead to go down by two points in a low-scoring thriller.

Douttas kicked four goals to one in the second half to claim its fifth win of the season, with Mitch Day and the returning Mitch Jensen both kicking two goals in tough conditions.

Campbell Wearne was the best player on the ground for the victors.

Maribyrnong Park remains one win ahead of the Stars and while both remain in the finals hunt, they will need to significantly improve their respective percentages in order to qualify for the finals in five weeks’ time.

Shore Factor No Issue For Eagles

CRAIGIEBURN kept itself in touch with the Division 1 top two with a dominant 63-point win over West Coburg on Saturday.

The Burgers, playing their third and final home game at Shore Reserve for the year, led by six points at half time after recovering from a slow start, but were completely blown out of the water by a rampant Eagles outfit after the main break.

Craigieburn piled on 14 goals to four in the second half, with Brent Gordon and Billy Morrison (best-on-ground) both starring up forward with four goals apiece.

Shannon Smith and John Bellino also contributed well up forward with three goals each of their own.

With four games to play, Craigieburn remains two wins behind second-placed Tullamarine while West Coburg is now three games off the finals pace and must win this weekend’s EDFL Match of the Day broadcast game at Hillside to remain in the hunt.

Improved Lions Eyeing Top Two Finish

COBURG Districts reasserted itself as one of the form teams of Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 by pulling away from Hadfield late on Saturday.

Two first half goals from Khoder Rabah and Daniel Midolo saw Hadfield get an early jump on the Lions and lead by 14 points at half time.

But from there, the game’s remaining five goals were all kicked by Districts.

The Lions were again well led up front with three goals from Tom Gleeson while Matthew Vesnaver and Josh Cauchi both starred in the 18-point win.

It was Districts’ fourth consecutive win with winnable games against the Northern Saints and Keilor Park still to come before the finals kick off on August 24.

In between those games, however, is a date with the undefeated Sunbury Kangaroos.

MOONEE Valley is also at 8-4 after coming back from a 22-point three-quarter time deficit to beat East Sunbury on Saturday.

The game was on East Sunbury’s terms for much of the day with Kane Murfett, Shane Lindsay and Tom Cree all play well for the Thunder.

But the Fog stormed home in the last with six unanswered goals to come away with a very important 15-point win.

Jordan Faba finished with three goals in the absence of Rocky Ferraro while Zac Di Giuseppe scored best-on honours.

The win didn’t come without incident, however, with star utility Braden Padmore set to miss the next fortnight of games after accepting a two-week set penalty for striking Cree in the second quarter.

He’ll miss games against Hadfield and Keilor Park but be eligible to return for the important final round home game against the Sunbury Kangaroos.
