Weekend Wrap

Stars Off The Bottom After Second Consecutive Win

ESSENDON Doutta Stars’ stunning mid-season turnaround continued on Saturday with a high-quality 23-point win at Avondale Heights.

Karl Brown again starred up forward with three goals as Douttas engaged in an entertaining shoot-out with Avondale Heights at Canning Street.

The Stars had to keep up with in-form Heights forward Luke Edwards, who is enjoying a very solid month thus far, kicking seven goals to take his July tally to 17.

The game turned in Douttas’ favour in the third quarter with the visitors piling on six goals to two to establish a 25-point lead by the final change.

That proved to be enough, as the Stars rollicked their way to a second consecutive win that now sees them off the bottom of the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division ladder for the first time this season.

Jordan Angus was best-on-ground alongside Bruno Laguda, Tom Wallis, Charles Lill and Jordan Schroder, all of whom have stepped up in recent weeks.

Final - Avondale Heights 15.9-99 def. by Essendon Doutta Stars 19.8-122

Mores Move To Third Spot

STRATHMORE’S rich vein of form continued with a solid 55-point win over Glenroy on Saturday.

Josh Helliwell starred up forward with five goals alongside Tom Condon (four goals) and Shane Foulds (three) as the Mores made light work of Glenroy at Mascoma Street, leading at every change throughout the day.

The undermanned Roys missed both Travis Dulic and Aaron Kite, among others, and simply could not keep up with the in-form Mores.

Experienced midfield pair Jaryd Cachia and Adam Iacobucci both dominated while coach Nathan Grima returned to the side and kicked a goal in what was his seventh on-field appearance for the year.

Strathmore is now one of four Premier Division teams with 10 wins and sits third on the ladder.

Final - Strathmore 19.12-126 def. Glenroy 10.11-71

Airport West Wins ‘Eagle-Off II’

AIRPORT West has proven the superior breed of Eagle in Essendon Ford Division 1 after defeating Craigieburn for the second time this year.

In Round 5 Airport West won by 50 points at DS Aitken Reserve but this time around it was a much closer affair, with the game staying in the balance for the duration at Hansen Reserve on Saturday.

Neither team had its best 22 on the park, allowing some lesser-known types to step up to the plate.

A wayward Airport West was led up front by Bior Malual, Luke Ryan and Jesse McVeigh, who each kicked two goals while up the other end the division’s leading goalkicker Dean Limbach had to settle for two in a dour but captivating contest.

Down by two points at three-quarter time, Airport West finished the game well but continued to pepper the sticks, kicking 2.6 to Craigieburn’s 1.1.

But that was enough for an eight-point win and it kept Airport West at the top of the ladder, while Craigieburn’s top two chances took another hit, now two games off the pace.

Final - Airport West 9.17-71 def. Craigieburn 9.9-63

Fletcher Confirms Jacana Departure On EDFL Radio

AFTER hinting through local media that he won’t be re-signing for 2019, on Saturday Jacana coach Robbie Fletcher told EDFL Match of the Day that this will be his final season in charge of the Jaguars.

Speaking with Michael Pepicelli, Kaine Hocking and Adem Saricaoglu after a 46-point loss to East Keilor, Fletcher was asked if he’d be returning as coach in 2019.

“I won’t be at Jacana,” Fletcher quickly responded.

“The club know - and I announced it to the players on Thursday night that I’ll be stepping aside and that gives Jacana the best opportunity to go out and find a coach, and then recruit some players.”

Saturday’s loss all but confirmed the wooden spoon for the winless Jags but they weren’t disgraced in what was still an entertaining broadcast game at Overland Reserve.

Bryce Kimuliatis starred up forward with four goals while Justin Colliss battled manfully across the ground.

But the Jags were simply outclassed by a desperate East Keilor outfit that was led brilliantly by playing coach, Ash Arrowsmith.

Dion Hill kicked four for the Cougars up forward and was named the RAWFORM Seamless Compression EDFL Player of the Day.

Final - East Keilor 19.11-125 def. Jacana 11.13-79

Wayward Pies Storm Home To Beat Lions

ROXBURGH Park produced the season’s most dramatic final term comeback to topple Coburg Districts for the third time this season.

The Magpies trailed by 28 points at three-quarter time after kicking 4.10 in the first three quarters to the Lions’ 9.8.

Their accuracy didn’t get any better in the final term but while managing to restrict Coburg Districts to just one goal, Roxburgh Park piled on 7.9 to run away with a very important 17-point win that keeps the Magpies in the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 top two hunt.

Luke Capuano kicked three goals alongside Ryan Kannegiesser, who was named best-on-ground.

For the undermanned Coburg Districts, the Vesnaver brothers combined for five majors.

Final - Coburg Districts 10.8-68 def. by Roxburgh Park 11.19-85

Thunder Claim Season Sweep Of Bears

EAST Sunbury’s top two hopes are still alive following a 19-point win over Burnside Heights at Tenterfield Drive.

The Bears jumped out of the gates with five goals to two in the opening term before East Sunbury steadied in the second to lead by seven points at half time.

It stayed close in the third quarter but with the scoring end, the Bears could only establish a six-point advantage by the final change, which proved to be not enough in the end.

The Thunder kicked six goals to two in the final term and was well-led by Lucas Shaw (three goals) and Kamen Ogilvie (two), going on to record its ninth win of the season.

Josh Covelli kicked eight for the Bears.

Final - Burnside Heights 13.4-82 def. by East Sunbury 15.11-101
