Roys Hold On At Lebanon

GLENROY is two and a half wins clear of the relegation zone after defeating Strathmore at Lebanon Reserve by a single point on Saturday.

In a game that remained close from start to finish, the Roys were more efficient in front of goal and successfully held off a fast finishing Mores outfit after leading by seven points at three-quarter time.

Daniel Riley starred for the visitors with two goals in a best-on-ground display, while Judd Brewster continued his good form with two of his own.

It was Glenroy’s second consecutive win with last-placed Airport West at home coming up this weekend.

A win there will most likely guarantee the Roys another year in Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division.

For Strathmore, this was its third consecutive loss, but the Mores remain fifth on the table at 6-6.

Blues Remain Undefeated At Windswept Raeburn

KEILOR’S remarkably unblemished record is still intact after withstanding a late Pascoe Vale flurry on Saturday.

At a severely wind-affected Raeburn Reserve, the Blues piled on seven goals to one kicking to the scoring end (southern end) in the third quarter and led by 34 points at the final change.

But from there, the remaining four goals of the game were all kicked by Pascoe Vale.

By halfway through the final term the margin had been whittled down to 10 points, but the Blues held firm to eventually score a nine -point win that keeps them on top of the ladder, one game clear of 2018 grand final nemesis, Aberfeldie.

Playing against his brother Matthew for the first time since both left Greenvale, Keilor’s Brett Stillman was best-on-ground for the second consecutive week while Julian Hemala was solid all day for the Panthers.

Pascoe Vale is outright third on the table and will enter next week’s home game against out-of-form Strathmore as a warm favourite.

Lakes Holds On In Lionheart Thriller

SATURDAY’S strong winds also had a major impact on the EDFL Match of the Day broadcast game at Lionheart Reserve between Taylors Lakes and Roxburgh Park.

In a game that loomed as crucial for both sides in their fight to avoid relegation, Taylors Lakes steadied in the first quarter after conceding the first two goals of the game to lead by 12 points at quarter time.

By three-quarter time the margin had ballooned out to 43 and could arguably have been much greater had the Lions kicked straight, but the Magpies had use of the scoring end in the final quarter and produced a stunning fightback.

Having only kicked four goals up to the final change, Roxburgh Park stormed home with seven goals to two in the final quarter, but simply ran out of time to snatch victory.

The Lions held on for a vital six-point win that moves them two wins clear of last-placed Oak Park, who will play flag fancy Tullamarine this coming weekend.

Jake Hobbs was the clear choice for best-on-ground alongside Trent Forbes, while Luke Capuano (three goals) and Jack Elliott were among Roxburgh Park’s best.

The Magpies are also two wins clear of the Kangaroos with four rounds still to play.

Districts Continues Late Season Surge

IT wasn’t pretty, but Cobourg Districts did enough to see off the in-form Moonee Valley on a heavy Cole Reserve deck on Saturday.

The in-form Lions kicked the only four goals of the first half before Moonee Valley finally clicked into gear in the third quarter, keeping Districts scoreless while piling on 3.5 with use of the scoring end in windy conditions.

But the Lions steadied in the last with two late unanswered goals to James Scheriani and Tom Gleeson, going on to record a 20-point win in a very low-scoring game.

Gleeson finished with two goals while Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 star, Tom Lucin, was best-on-ground.

Kris Thomas kicked two of Moonee Valley’s three goals for the day.

The win was Coburg Districts’ third in a row and with a kind run home that includes upcoming games against Hadfield, the Northern Saints and Keilor Park, the Lions should be on track to make the finals for the first time since losing the 2017 grand final to Jacana.

Sharks In Women’s Finals Hunt

HILLSIDE claimed its third victory in four weeks after pulling away from Strathmore late on Friday night at Shark Park.

The Sharks were slow out of the blocks and only led the division’s eighth-placed team by a single point at the final change, but managed kick the only two goals of the final term to win by 14 points.

In just her fifth game of the year, Emily Paterno was a clear choice for best-on-ground with four goals for the hosts.

The win, combined with Westmeadows’ heavy loss to flag favourite, Aberfeldie, saw Hillside leapfrog the Tigers into fifth spot, with the top five after next week’s final home-and-away round to qualify for the finals series.

The Sharks will be the underdog in this Friday’s home clash with Burnside Heights, but the Tigers, who are two premiership points behind Hillside in sixth spot, will also start as an underdog away to the Sunbury Kangaroos.

Magpies Confirm Finals Berth

ROXBURGH Park will play finals football in two weeks’ time after defeating Aberfeldie 2 at Lakeside Oval on Friday night.

After a close first quarter, the Magpies broke away from Aberfeldie’s second team with two unanswered goals in the second term to lead by 13 points at half time.

From there the game was in Roxburgh Park’s control as Aberfeldie 2 struggled to find a way back into the contest, eventually going down by 14 points and falling out of finals contention.

Elisha Wain was best-on-ground while Shelby Best was dangerous up forward with two goals.

The Division 1 top five is now locked with one home-and-away round to come, but the jostling for positions will be the big talking point leading into Round 14.
