Mores Beat Jets In Tense ‘Virtual Final’

STRATHMORE will feature in this year’s Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Finals Series after outlasting Greenvale at Mascoma Street on Saturday.

In a game that was billed as a ‘virtual final’, the Mores were engaged in an enthralling tussle with the Jets for the entire day, with the margin staying close for the entirety.

Down by four points at three-quarter time, Strathmore managed to kicked three goals to two in the final term to hold on for a gritty six-point win, guaranteeing a second consecutive Elimination Final berth with one home-and-away round still to come.

That Elimination Final will be played against Pascoe Vale at Coburg City Oval on Sunday, September 8 (Keilor will play Aberfeldie at Windy Hill in the Qualifying Final on the same day).

Kyle Weightman and Sean Callander (best-on-ground) both kicked three goals for the Mores while usual suspects Adam Iacobucci and Andrew Vavra both starred throughout the day.

The result also brought an end to Greenvale’s finals hopes, as the Jets are now locked into finishing fifth on the table.

This will be the first finals series not to feature Greenvale since 2014.

Relegation Decided At Canning Street

A STUNNING nine-goal-to-one second quarter was enough for Avondale Heights to see off Airport West at Canning Reserve on Saturday.

In a game that ultimately resulted in Airport West being relegated back to Division 1, the in-form Heights produced their best performance of the season to defeat the Eagles by 77 points.

After a close first quarter, the Heights managed to put the game on ice by half time, going into the main break ahead by 47 points.

Justin Morris was among the Heights’ best players, finishing with four goals alongside some handy two-goal contributions from Mathew Cravino, Jackson Robb, Hisham Kerbatieh and Matthew Borg.

Liam Byrne (one goal) was named best-on-ground.

With one home-and-away game to come, Airport West is now two games behind the Heights on the table and guaranteed to finish last.

Avondale Heights could jump two spots and finish as high as seventh with victory over Greenvale and losses to both Essendon Doutta Stars and Glenroy in their respective games this coming up weekend.

Cougars Claim Minor Premiership

EAST Keilor will enter the Division 1 Finals Series this weekend as the premiership favourite after easily accounting for Craigieburn at DS Aitken Reserve on Saturday.

In a game that ultimately decided who finished on top of the ladder, the Cougars stormed out of the blocks with eight goals to two in the first quarter to establish a commanding 36-point lead by quarter time.

The Eagles fought back to get within two goals by the main break, but East Keilor regained control in the second half to score a very impressive 60-point win and claim the minor premiership.

Grabowski brothers Nick and Josh both starred up forward with four goals apiece for the Cougars while Jackson Barrett booted five in a dominant forward line display.

Shannon Smith was Craigieburn’s leading goal kicker with three.

With Tullamarine losing its Round 18 game to Hillside, Craigieburn finished the home-and-away season in second spot on the ladder, setting up a re-match with East Keilor in this Saturday’s Qualifying Final at Windy Hill.

Sharks Send Coach Out A Winner

OUTGOING coach Steve Burns ended his Hillside tenure on a high after his Sharks proved too good for finals-bound Tullamarine on Saturday.

A blistering first quarter saw Hillside jump to a 37-point lead by quarter time.

By three-quarter time the Sharks led by 44, before Tullamarine whittled the margin down in the final term.

The Demons kicked six of the game’s final seven goals to bring their deficit down, but in the end the gap was simply too large, losing by nine points.

The loss cost Tullamarine a top two finish, resulting in an Elimination Final date with Westmeadows at Windy Hill on Sunday.

Hillside’s win left them in fifth spot, two wins short of a finals berth.

After a closely fought first half, the Kangaroos managed to pull away from Moonee Valley with nine goals to four in the third quarter on their way to a comfortable 32-point win in Saturday’s Qualifying Final.

Jared Pretty did most of the damage up forward with three goals while Brenton Sutherland, Mitch Streiff, Lachie Baddeley and Michael Kilty all kicked two.

Braden Padmore starred for Moonee Valley with four goals.

While Sunbury has now booked its place at Windy Hill for the decider on Saturday, September 7, Moonee Valley will have to front up again in this Saturday’s Preliminary Final against Burnside Heights at Coburg City Oval.

The winner of that will meet the Kangaroos in the following week’s Grand Final.

Bears Win Inaugural Final, Advance To Prelim

A DOMINANT seven-goal-to-one final term saw Burnside Heights claim victory over Coburg Districts in Saturday’s Elimination Final at Greenvale’s Section Road.

The game was close throughout the first three quarters and by three-quarter time, the Bears, playing in their first ever senior men’s final, led by just two points.

But the final term belonged to those in orange and blue, with Burnside Heights overpowering the Lions to claim a memorable 40-point win.

The division’s goal kicking champion for 2019, Josh Covelli, was at his brilliant best on Saturday with six of his side’s 16 goals, while Vincent Angelone starred alongside Matthew Brown and Rhys Bucktin.

The Bears’ win set up a Preliminary Final date with Moonee Valley this Saturday.

For Districts, Saturday’s loss marked the end of Chris Tankard’s tenure as coach after announcing his departure from the role earlier this year.

Aberfeldie Brings A-Game In Grand Final

ABERFELDIE maintained its untarnished season record with a dominant EDFL Women’s - Premier Grand Final performance against Keilor at Windy Hill on Saturday.

Siobhan Carlton was influential in the win and took out the best-on-ground medal, getting her hands on the ball around the ground and leading her side’s link up play.

She also kicked a trademark two-bounce running goal in the third quarter that was a key highlight of the game.

Sophie Cachia led the forward line pressure for Aberfeldie, especially early on, laying a number of crunching tackles to keep the Blues’ defenders on their toes.

Stars Shine Brightest In Windy Hill Decider

ESSENDON Doutta Stars has taken the 2019 EDFL Women’s - Division 1 premiership cup home to Cooper Street.

Five points was the margin at the end of Saturday’s Grand Final after Mia Heanly kicked a goal for Maribyrnong Park at the 19-minute mark of final term to bridge the gap within a kick late, before time ran out.

The result was indicative of the competition for the year, with the Stars ultimately proving too good.

Chandra Abrahams set the tone early for the Stars, following up her starring Semi Final performance to win the medal for best-on-ground.

However, neither team could get a goal on the board in a tight first half, with both teams’ defensive lines standing up under pressure.

Sade Rice, Megan Aherne and Megan Runting were able to rebound the Lions’ forays into their attacking half.
