Weekend Wrap

Tulla Mounts Stunning Comeback To Beat Eagles

TULLAMARINE remains undefeated in the Dave Connell era after storming home to beat Craigieburn in an Essendon Ford Division 1 thriller on Saturday.

Brad Allen was the star up forward with five goals but that was matched up the other end by Craigieburn recruit Dean Limbach, who’s had an outstanding season with 21 goals from just four games.

The Eagles dominated the top-of-the-table clash for three quarters looked home at three-quarter time, up by 39 points.

But from there the Demons rallied, kicking six unanswered final term goals (6.7 to be exact).

It was enough to get them over the line by three points, leaving Tullamarine at the top of the ladder at 3-0 alongside Airport West, who had a comfortable win over Jacana.

Final: Tullamarine 13.16-94 def. Craigieburn 14.7-91

Church Stars Against Old Club

Hillside returned to form in style with an impressive 107-point win over Westmeadows.

Mitch Church, facing his old side for the first time, was outstanding for the Sharks and led the way up forward with five goals alongside team mate Brandon Coletta, who snagged five of his own.

There was simply no stopping Hillside as it broke the game open in the second, with eight goals to the Tigers’ one.

Dean Clare added two more goals to his season tally of 17, but he didn’t have enough help around the ground, as the Tigers fell to 2-2 on the season.

Final: Hillside 25.8-158 def. Westmeadows 7.9-51

Bears Shock Lions With Eight-Goal Final Term

Burnside Heights had a ‘coming of age’ win over Coburg Districts that has left many Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 pundits stunned.

Josh Covelli was again the focal point up forward with four goals as the Bears worked their way into the lead in the final term after going into the final change down by 15 points.

It was a high-scoring affair at Cole Reserve as Coburg Districts established their advantage on the scoreboard, but the Bears were always in the hunt.

The result leaves last year’s runner-up languishing at 1-3 in sixth spot on the ladder, with Burnside Heights now above them at 2-2 in fifth.

The Northern Saints, East Sunbury and Moonee Valley are up next for Coburg Districts – all three are currently in the top four.

Final: Coburg Districts 14.13-97 def. by Burnside Heights 19.8-122

Valley The New Division 2 Favourite

East Sunbury’s outstanding start to Season 2018 came to a halt at the hand of Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Led by Jordie Faba (three goals) up forward and another impressive performance from Cory McGrath with two, the Fog maintained their dominance over the Thunder from half time, where it led by 30 points.

In yet another example of just how tough it is going to be for anyone wearing white shorts at Ormond Park, the Valley kept a potent East Sunbury to just seven goals for the day, but the Thunder was left ruing several missed opportunities in a woeful final term in front of the sticks, scoring 1.7.

It means Moonee Valley is now the last remaining undefeated side in Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 with four wins and Hadfield is next up in Round 6.

Final: Moonee Valley 10.17-77 def. East Sunbury 7.13-55

Roys Climb To Fifth In Split Round Win At Canning

Glenroy’s impressive jump to Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division was on full display on EDFL Match of the Day on Saturday.

The Roys are now fifth on the ladder after pulling away from Avondale Heights on Saturday with Aaron Kite (four goals) and Adam Winter (three) starring up forward against the undermanned Heights, who struggled to adjust without ruckman Cameron Wood, who will be out for the rest of the year with an ACL injury.

Glenroy simply had too much firepower for Avondale Heights, with Adam Del Busso, Matt Walker and RAWFORM Seamless Compression Player of the Day Judd Brewster all enjoying solid days at the office.

Meanwhile on the other side of the river it was Maribyrnong Park who was too good for Strathmore, getting up by 53 points with Daylan Kempster snagging four.

Round 5 continues this weekend.

Bears, Sharks Claim Wins On Sunday

Burnside Heights is now the top team on the EDFL Women’s ladder after getting the job done against a plucky Westmeadows outfit on Sunday.

The competition’s leading goal-scorer, Brooke McKinley, kicked another two goals the Bears kicked clear from the Tigers in the second term to run away with a 66-point win.

Meanwhile at Shark Park, Hillside improved its record to 2-3 after taking care of Roxburgh Park.

Nikita Wright and Brittany McIntyre each kicked two in the hard-fought 14-point win.

Round 5 continues this weekend with four more games, including a Friday night game between Aberfeldie and Strathmore.
