Airport West To Hold Inaugural Indigenous Day

By JACOB MANZIE

AIRPORT West will hold its inaugural NAIDOC Week event before their home game against Taylors Lakes at Hansen Reserve on Saturday.

The event is to show support to Indigenous groups and leads into NAIDOC week, which stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.

These committees were put in place to increase awareness around the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.

The week is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements, as well as to show appreciation for the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and society.

This event also pays respects to past and present players of the Airport West Football Club.

“The main focus is to shine light on the Indigenous players that we have running around for our club, as well as other Indigenous players throughout the Essendon Football District League,” Airport West President Dean Young said.

“It is the first year we are putting this event on, so there is plenty of excitement around the club.

“It should be a great day and a good way to show respects to them.”

The Airport West side alone has multiple Indigenous players that compete in the seniors and reserves sides for the club, with the likes of Cory McGrath, Rex Taylor, Matthew Duggan and Jonathan Mullins all to take on Taylors Lakes in a big Essendon Ford Division 1 clash.

All players will wear a customised jumper designed by Matthew Duggan.

The event is $50 per ticket, with a welcome band that will kick off proceedings at 11:45, which is then followed by a two-course meal, as well as guest speakers Michael O’Loughlin and Peter Burgoyne, which will run from 12pm to 2pm.

The club is expecting around 120 people in what should be a great day.
